Hydraulic Milemarker Winch on Td5 Defender PTO
|
An hydraulic winch does not rely on batteries, can work underwater and it does really pull! We decided to install an hydraulic winch to have a great pulling capacity on an heavily equipped D110 Td5. We didn't like the idea to have it feed by the steering pump so the alternative was to have a dedicated rotary pump on the A/C or an hydraulic pump on the LT 230 trasfer case power take off. The fact the D110 already has A/C forced to this second solution and we're glad to give hints on installation and system performance. Direct Mount Hydraulic PTO is designed to adapt an hydraulic pump to a Land Rover LT230 transfer case PTO aperture. Winch is a MIlemarker, solenoids are custom for this application.
Remove cubby box or 3rd seat and access the LT230 PTO aperture. We have started the job from the above but plan to work from down under to.
Remove the 6 bolts. Bolts are factory loctited and might be very tight.
Insert a sharp chisel and gently tap to remove the cap. After the cap, as you can see, there is another aluminum plate. Take care not to move it and loose alignment.
Clean silicone sealant and oil.
Apply a good quantity of silicone sealant and couple the adaptor plate. You cannot fit it wrong since the bolts are not evenly spaced. Use hex head 12.9 bolts included with the kit, blue loctite and torque wrench to 40 Nm.
Adaptor plate installed. The inside drum will couple the hydraulic pump when engaged.
The PTO has 2 pairs of mounting holes, hydralic pump flange has 2, 180° apart. So there are 4 different position that can be used to make piping up easy. Here you can see the High Pressure (HP) output on the right and LP oil feeding that come from a separate tank, on the left. Use blue loctite and torque wrench the 2 bolts at 30 Nm. The pump has an O Ring so we didn't use sealant to couple it with the adaptor plate. Pump rotation is "clockwise".
The piping at the start. Think your piping well since the HP pipes are not easy to bend and route in small places.
We have secured the solenoids on a custom made stainless steel bracket right above the pump.
Drill a 10 mm hole to fit the engagement leverage.
Insert the control rod and bolt the rose ball end joint to the PTO lever. The washer has to be fitted between the rose joint and the lever. Fit the yellow knob to control the rod.
Piping up.
The oil tank is custom made to accomodate in the battery compartment. 2 taps are handfull in the case the tank has to be moved to change the battery.
Drill 36 mm holes to fit the pipe that will go to the pump feeding inlet.
We have used 2 of the battery compartment stock rubber caps to avoid water to come in.
Cap once adapted on the pipe.
The oil tank installed. Tanks capacity is 12 liters.
Close up. The upper pipe is low pressure return.
Pipes out of the battery compartment.
Low pressure "T" takes its place on D110's frame.
Piping arrangment almost completed.
The remote control socket under the drivers seat.
Once everything has been fitted we have riveted the bracket in place.
HP pipes run from solenoids to winch motor.
Remove the red plastic cap and connect the HP pipe to winch via the HP nipple.
A small part of the grille's frame has to be cut to fit the "L" pipe end.
Both pipes connected.
Also the front grille must be cutted to clear the winch.
Fill the tank with proper hydro oil. Synthetic oils work the best.
