5Hydraulic Milemarker Winch and dedicated ZF Pump

Once that we have experienced the performance of an hydraulic winch and PTO pump, we thought it was time to upgrade the Soft Top D90. We choose to go for a different way and we have made it to work with a dedicated ZF high pressure rotary pump placed on the A/C compressor slot.

Pump has been installed via a custom bracket. On the left you can see the Banjo high pressure (HP) fitting coming from solenoids and the blue low pressure (LP) pipe coming from the oil tank.

Installation is pretty much an easy job. Essentially you must find a good place for all of the components (tank, solenoids and pipes). Oil tank has been placed just on the opposite of the power steering tank. From the tank you have 2 LP pipes to go to pump and solenoids.

We found the best place for solenoid just on top of fender flares in the engine bay. Removal of the plastic ventilation grille (fake on Td5's) helps when you're connecting pipes and doing electricals. Solenoids have 2 HP output for the winch motor, one for the ZF pump and one LP (to the tank). Output for winching out must have a flow control valve. Our installation has been completed in different days so we have taped all the solenoids and pipes to avoid contamination.

From solenoids we routed the HP pipes behind the glass washer tank, under the lights and through an hole in the body to reach the radiators compartment. The hole wasn't wide enough for both the pipes so we drilled another one right to it. To avoid pipe damages we protected them with rubber slaves where in contact with the body.

Once closed the hydraulic circuit, we connected the ZF pump with the belt. Note that when you do it you MUST have oil in the circuit cause the belt will make the pump work (not in pressure). Fit the pulley and bolt the three 13mm bolts while holding with a #9 hex wrench.

The belt must be changed with the A/C belt (LR part # PQS101500). The Land Rover Workshop suggests to remove the fan but we found that we can do the job with the fan in place. Whatever your decision will be you need a wrench buddy to hold the tensioner pulley with a 15 mm wrench and rotate it so that the tension is lowered and the belt can be pulled out.

Same job to fit the new belt. Make sure the belt is well lined. Now we only need to fill the tank with ATF oil. Fill the tank and winch for a couple seconds, then fill again and winch a few more seconds. Do it again until the oil level is costant. The circuit needs about 1 kg of ATF.
